PAUL STOOD BEFORE THE DARK ANGEL

Paul stood before the dark angel.
The darkness moved around them, killing any light, engulfing the small clearing in the shadow of the statue made of black stone. It was a statue of a demon, an angel cast out from the heavens. Standing twenty feet tall, eyes closed as if resting, its presence was sentient, six arms spread out like wings, each holding a different weapon and ready to defend its master.
Its evil seeped through the rock, destroying everything. This was not a place of worship. It was a place of pain.
The woman lay at its feet like a sacrificial offering. Her skin, the colour of marble, clung to the bones and made her look more like a skeleton than a human being. Withered with age, her life-force almost gone, she still had her hands out in front of her, in one last defiant gesture. She had defended herself against the impossible but lost.
Paul gazed upon the ancient face, his eyes brimming over with tears. His heart broke and he sank slowly to his knees, reaching forward to touch the woman’s face, his tear falling on the dark angel.
The demon’s eyes snapped opened, revealing molten lava that blazed like a beacon in the darkness.
The woman screamed as the light hit her…
