A former Sandwell schoolboy is
aiming for the best seller lists after
realising his life-long dream of publishing a novel.
Kamal Lathar, who writes as K D Lathar, will
launch his book, The Changeling, on Monday.
The novel, being printed by Tarragon Publishing,
is already attracting widespread attention.
It is expected to sell out
almost immediately.
And the author, who grew
up in Edgbaston and went to
school in Smethwick, is
hoping for similar success
from the paperback version,
which comes out on September 5th.
One book collector reportedly paid more than £150 for
an uncorrected proof copy of
the book earlier this month,
in a bid to get their hands on
it before its release date.

The book, which is aimed
at readers aged 10 and over,
tells the unusual tale of
Peter Badger, who is part
boy, part Badger and struggles
to contain the animal
within him.
Mr Lathar, who attended
the then Holly Lodge
Grammar School, in West
Smethwick, went in for a scientific career, studying
physics and astrophysics at
university, and hoped to
become an astronaut.
He didn't get into orbit,
but he did end up becoming
a top-level IT security consultant.
Now living in Oxford, the
44-year-old still looks back
with fond memories on his
Smethwick school days.
"I loved growing" up in
Birmingham, and Holly
Lodge was a fantastic
school," he said.
It was later in life, as a
father, that Mr Lathar
gained the inspiration to
become a writer and pen a
novel.
He said: "I used to read a
different story each night to
my children and eventually I
started making up my own,
and it all started from
there," he said.
"It has taken me two years
to write The Changeling,
using every bit of spare time
I could find.
" I think it's the most difficult
thing I have ever
done."
